Pixar is the real bad guy for portraying a spirited, creative boy as a villain. Nothing wrong with being a garbage man (my father worked as a garbage man for a time), but it’s not exactly a cinematic ending for this poor boy, who is probably tormented for the rest of his life with the knowledge that at least one toy in this world (and probably others) are alive, sentient, and mean. When we see Sid again in Toy Story 3, he is listening to heavy metal music, working as a garbage man. Woody’s “Play nice” warning to Sid at the end of the film was cruel and unnecessary. Unless of course you’re being compared to stick-in-the-mud rule-follower Andy. Pixar tries like hell to make Sid look bad with a skull on his tee-shirt, but this is an ordinary kid who likes to makes things, take things apart, and even occasionally blow things up. Yes, he tormented his sister, but what brother doesn’t? Yes, he was apparently kicked out of summer camp, but many creative people throughout history were misunderstood. Sid was a normal child with a creative, experimental mind. My sibling and I would take great pleasure in jamming Weebles into the crack between the door and the wall then slamming the door so that the Weebles would explode into dozens of pieces.ĭid this make us rotten children or simply curious kids who liked to experiment on the toys we had stopped playing with long ago? Was I evil or even wrong to wonder if my Sho-Gun Warrior could survive a 15 foot plunge to the Earth? Not only does he speak to Sid, but he gets dark and creepy while doing so, scaring the bejesus out of this poor kid.Īs a child, I would throw my toys out of the window of my second floor bedroom onto the gravel driveway to determine which would break. Yet at the end of the film, Woody goes rogue and reveals himself to be alive. Yes, perhaps if you are a toy, this is not a good thing, but should we expect Sid to be aware that his toys might be secretly sentient, filled with hopes and fear? Sid, Andy’s next door neighbor, was portrayed as the antagonist in Toy Story simply because he liked to take toys apart and reassemble them in new and creative ways. Then again, like most things in life, we’ll probably have someone in the comments section note what a great lounge this is and how empty it was when they went. You’ll note this lounge does accept Priority Pass…but this is one of those lounges where I’d rather sit in the gate area then sit in. I later found a front desk where I guess I should have checked in.but it was unattended. Next to it was a microwave, a coffee machine, and a refrigerator with some juices and water. There were also sandwiches covered in plastic wrap (the entire platter, not the individual sandwiches) in a refrigerator. After two years, the software has undergone a major update with exponential improvements over versions 12 and 13. The new Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional has been launched worldwide, and this version takes speech recognition to places its never been before. There was some hot food, which is more than the EgyptAir lounges offered, but it did not look very appetizing, certainly not when there were swarms of people lined up to devour it like vultures. Dragon Professional 15 Review Dragon Professional 15 Takes Productivity to New Levels. The lounge was all tables and chairs and all were occupied. Just walk right in, because no was checking who was coming in and out. The sign will say “Cairo Airport Company” Lounge. This is apparently a credit card lounge as well, as a large MasterCard sign stood outside and an American Express sign inside. You’ll pass several offices on the way down the hall, all filled with men and women smoking (the no smoking signs through Cairo Airport are laughable). This lounge is located in Terminal 3 just past security and passport control. I’m really going to make this brief: stay away. First Class Lounge Cairo (CAI) Terminal 3 Review If you thought the EgyptAir lounge in Cairo was bad, this takes “bad” to a whole different level. The only thing first class about this lounge is the name. If Kardashian feels so negatively about a photo of herself looking like that, how would she feel about a candid bikini shot of me or anyone else with a different body type from hers? I then pondered how many social media posts I've seen of beautiful people who might've secretly used FaceTune or an awkwardly stretched pose to hide the fact that they look more like me than they do a Kardashian. Insecurity bubbled deep in my gut, more so than I've felt in a long time. In that moment, just like my thinner friends who unintentionally questioned my own body-image by calling themselves fat when they weren't, Kardashian's knee-jerk reaction to an "unflattering" photo revealed a damaging belief that she, intentionally or not, passed on to her 155 million Instagram followers: Worth is directly tied to appearance, and anything different than tapered waistlines, thigh gaps, and airbrushed skin has no place in a perfect world. This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from. On the surface she was just trying to guard herself against claims of over-editing, but a sinister subtext remained: I promise I'm not as fat or ugly as you think I am. It wasn't her words that sent an icky shiver down my spine it was the fact that she paired this message with videos and photos of her bare stomach and legging-clad backside, taut and toned in all their buff, supposedly unretouched glory. And thanks to social media photo tagging, we all know what it's like to see a photo of yourself that doesn't quite capture how you looked and felt in that given moment. As far as bullying from the masses goes, she has arguably had it the worst among her hyper-famous family. That part of her message, I think, is entirely fair. In response to all the hullabaloo about this photo, Kardashian posted a lengthy note to Instagram, musing on how her self-image has suffered from being in the public eye and that she had every right to shield our eyes from a photo that was posted without her consent. As a member of one of the world’s most notable families - one who’s taken her fair share of both warranted and unwarranted criticism - she's a prime example of what can happen when a celebrity is afraid to be seen as is. The most recent case in point: Khloé Kardashian’s "photogate" incident from April. Celebrities have been accused of, in many instances, deleting their own posts or altering the images in their posts ( Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan have faced accusations, among others). Indirectly and probably without them even realizing it, a famous person’s own insecurities can send regular people into a head-first tailspin of our own. Obviously, A-listers aren't coming to my house to hang out and unload all their insecurities on me - but they constantly send the same hurtful message when they refuse to be photographed or perceived in a certain way. Celebrities and influencers, however, say this to everyone, all the time, and there's pretty much jack shit I can do about it. Those kinds of conversations thankfully don't happen to me nearly as often in adulthood, and I've learned how to handle it when it does. So there I sit in front of her, twice her size and height, wondering how she must think I look. Because when she says she feels fat, I know what she really means is that she feels unattractive, as if those two things are mutually exclusive ( they’re not). "I feel so fat," she delfates, and my desire to be seen in public shatters. She turns abruptly to me, sending her long, wavy hair over one delicate shoulder, her flat stomach peeking out from above her mid-rise jeans. It’s a Friday night and we’re teenagers so, naturally, we’re hunting for outfits that’ll make us look older and sexy for our wild night out at the local AMC theater. We’re alone in her room, my conventionally hot friend and I, shuffling through Forever 21 crop tops and Revlon lipsticks like a groundhog who isn’t ready to see its own shadow. Given that the manipulative aspect of so many of the 'laws' are so different from how I go about the world maybe I'm uncomfortable feeling so naive. In the future I'll listen to it again and maybe I'll like it a bit more. What I liked were the historical references, as I appreciated concrete examples. So laws only work up to a certain point then they backfire. I didn't expect it to be as contradictory as it was. It was very close to what I expected it to be. This is a book that I have been meaning to read for years. (Posted on ) Trump's playbook but for a few he missed Review by Ingrid This book contains many fabulous examples from history, legends, and fables. Great Performance! Review by Susan Goldcamp Lots of vignettes and short chapters, so easy to pick up again if your attention wanders. I read 33 strategies of war by the same author, so I knew the story was likely to be good, and I was not disappointed. The stories were great too, I just would have liked to see more contemporary examples of power plays. Really enjoyed how the narrator could adopt the tone of the various characters. The narration was great, keeping one interested throughout the book. (Posted on ) Excellent Narration, Great Story, a great listen Review by Mikuhl Very much enjoyed this book, well performed, easy to listen too and very well researched. (Posted on ) Fantastic book that was very well narrated Review by bryan (Posted on ) Amazing narration! Review by d jonesĪmazing performance by the narrator! He took me on journey through time to learn about the dynamics of power and human behavior But the book is useful in pointing out how people acquire and maintain power, and there is a benefit to being aware of how power can work. So I would not highly recommend this book because there is little emphasis, if any, in character. And even thought I do not believe I will ever live by the majority of these laws, being aware of them has helped open my eyes to what is going on around me. But I realized that even though I may dislike these "laws of power" they are at play in the world I live in. So why did I listen to the whole thing? I thought about returning the book after listening to the first chapter. The author seems to recommend some of the behavior we naturally disapprove of as an acceptable means to power. This book seems to outline all the dirty tricks played by politicians to stay in power. Maybe I am naive when it comes to power, or too idealistic. (Posted on ) Interesting Review by MarlonĪs a Christian I find myself struggling with these laws and approaches to power. The narrator was awesome, but the knowledge was priceless. One of the best audio book I've listened. Customer Reviews My new bible Review by Junior NOTE: This laser effect is for DJ and home use and not intended for commercial use.

On the whole, I feel like it holds up pretty well. I really enjoyed revisiting this golden age Star Wars classic actually. Well, when Aspyr clean up the PC invader mess, of course, which they’re apparently working on. At $20, it isn’t the cheapest thing on the eShop, but there’s at least 15 hours of play in the campaign, and you could easily spend hours on the online portion. Which is interesting, because you could tweak aspect ratio in Jedi Outcast but that doesn’t seem to be possible here.Īs mentioned, the same issues remain that affected the game at launch, and, of course, the price tag is going to be a stumbling block for some. I actually found some of the screens stretched and they suffer a bit in handheld mode. Ultimately, this can lead you into the arms of the Empire, or bring about a new generation of Jedi. Under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker and Kyle Katarn, you’re sent on various away missions to take down everything from smugglers to Stormtroopers, all while dealing with a jealous co-student who seems more content to make life difficult for you.Īnd to further make the Jedi Academy story interesting, the narrative will shift depending on where you place points on your force powers. Games like Duck Tales used to normalise this kind of level selection back in the day, but it’s been a while since we’ve had a modern game that lets us do that to a similar extent, and it’s actually a really neat way to make an experience feel less linear.Įach mission still contributes to the over-arching story of investigating a Sith Cult. Being able to choose where I go and what I do feels surprisingly fresh all over again. And that’s something else that makes this port feel more relevant than Outcast – the ability to pick and choose the missions you want, visiting infamous Star Wars landmarks as you do. It’s not quite worked out for the best.įortunately, the campaign still holds up pretty well. This is a bit disappointing as one of the key selling points of this port is being able to have this online experience on Switch, and while it’s been partly sabotaged in one way, I’ve also struggled to find games at other times. Mouse and keyboard is definitely still the way to play. Though PC owners are definitely having more fun with that at the moment. That’s right, Aspyr have gone the extra mile and added the beloved mode in with this port unlike they did with Jedi Outcast. This should also suitably get you in the mood to jump online and have lightsaber duels with the rest of the world. Honestly, I barely switched to my guns, and whenever I did it was mostly just to navigate some tricky environments because I felt more comfortable in first-person view.Īdmittedly, in a world where we now have the excellent Fallen Order, it does feel dated – especially since there’s not much flexibility in your blocking and striking on Switch – but being able to deflect blaster fire, slow-mo kill Sith lords, and cinder Stormtrooper helmets with a downward slash is still ever satisfying. Not least of which, teaming up with Chewie is a dream come true for me.īeing able to wield my lightsaber from the very beginning is an immediate bonus – same as it was back in 2003 – and it reminded me just how good Raven’s vision of combat still is. Truthfully, I enjoyed revisiting Jedi Academy and quickly felt comfortable sinking my teeth into the action. In that sense, I would argue that Jedi Academy has aged better than its predecessor because these mechanics will undoubtedly feel more familiar to players of modern shooters.Īnd many of the criticisms lobbied at the game at the time – dated engine, level design, poor AI – while still applicable, will be more expected and accepted in a ported re-release. You can also level up your force powers and customise load-outs to bring into each mission. True, Jedi Academy absolutely continues the story and models itself on the adventures of Kyle Katarn, but it’s also very much its own entity.įor instance, you can create your own Jedi in training – choosing the hilt and colour of your lightsaber, as well as race, gender and appearance. Yes, I also remember and have fond memories of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter. And part of the problem was following in the footsteps of one of best shooter-hybrids of the early 2000s, and what many regarded as one of the greatest Star Wars game of its time. I always felt like Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy got a slightly unfair rep when it first launched.Ĭritically, it took a little bit of a knocking. |
